Bell Times/Bus Routes
Attendance
The Importance of School Attendance
Students are expected to be on time to all classes. Students are to be inside the classroom when the tardy bell rings. Students arriving late to school should report to the attendance office, located in the main office. Students will be given five minutes during each passing period; do not loiter in the hallways.
Reminders
- Do not send your child to school if they are ill.
- If your child takes medication, it needs to be in the correct bottle with the correct labels and written permission from a parent or guardian.
- If your child is ill and misses a school day, please notify the school nurse or office with the reason they are not present.
- Regular checkups with your doctor are an important part of the growth and development of your child.
Opportunities for makeup Work
A student will be given the opportunity to make up work missed due to an absence. However, it is the responsibility of the student, immediately upon his or her return to class from an absence, to request and complete any assignments and/or assessments missed because of an absence. Teachers are to have regular make-up policies in place and outlined in their syllabi.
When students have documented medical absences on file, they are to be given extended deadlines for completing assignments. All deadline dates must be fair and reasonable.
Teachers will provide a reasonable amount of time for students to make-up work. A rough standard is one to two days of make-up time for every school day missed. Even so, the district generally allows the teacher to determine what is reasonable, given the particular circumstances of a student’s absence and the activities missed. Missed tests and quizzes may be made up outside of class time, usually before or after school or during lunch.
If a student is going to be absent for two or more days in a row, a parent or guardian may contact the counselor for assignments, who, in turn, will contact the teacher for specific work.

After School
When classes are dismissed for the day, all administrators, school and security personnel will supervise primary campus exits, the bus-loading area, and parking lots until 3:50 p.m. or until the campus is cleared by the vast majority of students. Early Dismissal/Pick-Up
A legal guardian is automatically authorized to check their child out of school unless official court documents are submitted to the school’s main office with instructions that restrict the parent/guardian’s access to the child. Such instructions will be entered into the District’s student information management system. Only a parent or legal guardian may designate another adult (over the age of 18) to pick up a student early from school. Such authorization must be presented in writing and entered into the District’s emergency contact database (PowerSchool). Persons authorized by the parent or legal guardian for early pickup must be able to produce valid, unexpired, photo identification.
To ensure students always leave school in the custody of a safe adult, adults who arrive at school to check out a student must check in at the main office, sign an early release document, and provide valid photo identification. Leaving school without Administrative permission is classified as Truancy.
Students that are 18 years or older will still be required to check out in the main office. Students who are listed as self-support will be able to sign themselves out. If a student is not on self-support the parent/guardian on file must still be notified and give consent for the student to check themselves out.
Early Dismissal/Pick-up will be cut off at 3:15pm to help ensure a smooth dismissal.
Late Arrival
- Students may begin entering the building beginning at 8:00 am each morning for the safety of students. All students MUST enter through the front entrance.
- Students entering prior to 8:00am pose a safety risk as there are no staff members on contract to supervise students. We realize this can cause issues for some families during extreme weather. If you have any concerns please reach out to the attendance office so we can work together to find a solution.
- 8:20 - students are allowed to head towards their first hour
- 8:25 - 5 minute warning bell
- 8:30am - SCHOOL STARTS
- 8:30 - 8:45 - students who arrive during this time are given a tardy pass and sent directly to class
- Students who are late because of a school bus, will ALWAYS be excused. Please make sure to let us know you rode a bus so we mark it correctly.
- 8:45 - 9:00 - Parent/Guardian MUST notify if a student is late or the student must have documentation.
- Attendance office, 918-833-8542 or email at mcalinadmin@tulsaschools.org; students must have documentation as to why they are tardy, or a parent/guardian must escort their student into the attendance office.
- Students who did not receive a phone call will be sent to room 138 until the end of the hour.
- Students will be expected to work on Exact Path until the end of the hour to ensure their time is used wisely.
- 9:00 or later - Students that arrive after 9:00 am MUST be escorted in by a parent/guardian.
- The only exception to this is if the student comes in with a note from a doctor, the dentist, a court appointment, counseling, or something equivalent. A parent/guardian note WILL not work.
- Students that arrive after 9:00 am and are not escorted by a parent/guardian will be sent to TRAICE for an unspecified amount of time.
- Students who have been assigned a day of TRAICE will report directly to room 138 by 8:30am, as they would if they were going to their regular class.
- According to law, students who are more than 15 minutes late to class are considered absent.
- Please also be reminded that 3 tardies equals 1 absence.
TARDIES
Tardiness to class is a disruption of the normal operation of school and will be taken seriously. A student is tardy to class if they are not in the assigned classroom when class time begins.
Excused: Excused tardies will be issued on rare occasions when, in the judgment of the appropriate staff member (the attendance clerk, dean, counselor, or an administrator), the reasons given indicate a valid explanation.
Students reporting to school after the bell must receive a pass and after 8:45am must check-in with the Attendance Office prior to proceeding to class. Students arriving between 8:30-8:45 should refer to the policy above, and after 9:00 must be escorted by a parent/guardian. Students frequently tardy to school and/or class will be subject to disciplinary action, Please review this document for the full tardy policy & including disciplinary measures that may be taken.
If a student rides a TPS bus and is late to school because of their bus it will NOT count against them. In the case where the staff is not aware of the late bus we recommend that the student notifies the McLain Staff to ensure they receive a late bus pass and are NOT counted as tardy or absent. As it is an excused tardy or absence.
Students must have a pass to enter class late at all times. Students will not be allowed to enter class late without a pass. Students who are more than 2 minutes late without an explanation will be sent to TRAICE.
